We love typewriters. Apparently, so does Tom Hanks.

Here at Headlines we have a soft spot for typewriters; from the ancient Royal Deluxe sitting in our boardroom to the retro Olivetti adverts that we have framed in our hallway. And so does actor, producer, director and writer, Tom Hanks, who apparently owns quite an extensive collection. Mr Hanks recently expressed this love for typewriters in an article for the New York Times.

“I use a manual typewriter — and the United States Postal Service — almost every day. My snail-mail letters and thank-you notes, office memos and to-do lists, and rough — and I mean very rough — drafts of story pages are messy things, but the creating of them satisfies me like few other daily tasks… No one throws away typewritten letters, because they are pieces of graphic art with a singularity equal to your fingerprints, for no two manual typewriters print precisely the same.”

Kudos to you Tom. We kinda feel the same way. Although we won’t be getting rid of our Apple Macs just yet.

And that’s not all! We’d like to present the last of our new additions to the Headlines Advertising team, Avisha Neerachand.

Currently studying her IMM Marketing Diploma, Avisha joined us as our new Production / Media Co-Ordinator having started her career as a Media Planner at Caxtons Newspapers for several years. Avisha has a passion for the advertising industry and in her own words is “loving my job every minute of every day.” After hours you’ll more than likely find her teaching dancing and networking in her spare time.

Avisha is, for the most part, the first point of contact when phoning through to our offices, so the next time you do, make sure to say “Hi!”

We were recently treated by Antalis Papersmiths to a special breakfast gathering at “Market” in Marriott Road (or as it’s now called, Gladys Mazibuko Road) as they showcased the winning entrants in the Antalis “Art of Design” 2012 competition.

The competition is a celebration of South African design excellence, aiming to inspire originality, big ideas, paper usage and beautiful presentations. Launched in June 2011, this year’s competition received 474 exceptional entries across the seven commercial categories as well as 89 entries in the student category.

The 2012 AoD competition focused on the special connection between paper and design and the entry kit showcased the many ways that paper and design love one another, in the theme “Paper Loves Design”.

Though this year saw our first ever entry not achieve any success, we of course remain ever hopeful for future success as we look forward to next year’s competition.

Congratulations to all winners and thanks to Antalis for their commitment and encouragement to the South African design scene.

The winner can all be seen here on Antalis’ website.
